First edition of Balfour’s Inaugural Address delivered on his installation as Lord Rector . Octavo, bound in full calf with Balfour’s signature stamped in gilt to the front panel. Presentation copy, inscribed by Arthur James Balfour on the front free endpaper, “‘B. Mallet, with the kindest regards of Arthur James Balfour. 18.8.92.” The recipient, Bernard Mallet, later Sir Bernard Mallet, was a civil servant who served as Balfour’s private secretary. Later, he was Registrar General and President of the Royal Statistical Society from 1916 to 1918. He married Marie Adeane, who at various times was a Maid of Honour to Queen Victoria and had two sons, one of whom was Sir Victor Mallet, the diplomat. In very good condition.

Rare Naval commission signed by Andrew Johnson as President of the United States. One page, partially printed with engraved vignettes and retaining the original orange paper seal, the document is dated May 1, 1866 and appoints Leonard Paulding as Commander in the United States Navy. Signed at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. Leonard Paulding served in the U.S. Navy from 1840 to 1867. Beginning as a midshipman abroad the USS Preble II, he was promoted to an officer on September 14, 1855 and subsequently to commander with the present document. In near fine condition. Matted. The entire piece measures 23 inches by 20 inches.

Clark worked for The International News Service and interviewed Eisenhower on several occasions. Both are fine condition in very good to near fine dust jackets. A nice inscription.

First edition of volume one of President Eisenhower’s memoirs. Octavo, original cloth, pictorial map endpapers. Inscribed on the half title page by the author, “For The Honorable John R. Dethmers with best wishes from Dwight D. Eisenhower.” The recipient, John R. Dethmers was a member of the Michigan Republican State Central Committee in 1939. Dethmers served as Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party from 1942–1945 and was a delegate to the 1944 Republican National Convention. He served as Michigan Attorney General from 1945-1946. Governor Harry Kelly appointed Dethmers Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, serving from 1946–1970 and serving as Chief Justice of the Michigan State Supreme Court in 1953, 1956–1962, and 1967-1969. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. A nice association.
