Autograph letter signed by “the maker of modern Greece,” Eleftherios Venizelos. One page, typescript on Delegation Hellenique letterhead, the letter reads, “Lausanne, 7th December 1922 My dear Mr. Hammond, I thank you most cordially for your letter and wish to express to you the deep gratitude that I feel for the promptness with which you have do kindly undertaken to help us in this hour of trial and misfortune. I am indeed very sorry to hear that your daughter has been ill and hope that she has by this time completely recovered. My wife joins me in cordial greetings to Mrs. Hammond and yourself. Yours sincerely, E. K. Veniselos.” The recipient, John Hays Hammond was a successful American mining engineer, diplomat, and philanthropist with who Venizelos corresponded regularly. A close friend of President William Howard Taft, Hays was appointed a special United States Ambassador and became chairman of the U.S. Coal Commission in 1922. In fine condition. Double matted and framed, the entire piece measures 12 inches by 14 inches. A nice association.

First edition of this collection of writings from President Truman. Quarto, original cloth, illustrated. Lengthily inscribed and dated by Harry Truman below the frontispiece portrait opposite the title page, “To my good friend Hon. + Mrs. W. K. Granger with kindest regards Harry Truman.” The recipient Walter Keil Granger was a United States Representative from Utah. Granger served as member of the Utah House of Representatives from 1932 to 1937, and serving as speaker in 1935. He then served as member of the Public Service Commission of Utah from 1937 to 1940. In 1941 Granger was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-seventh and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1941 to January 3, 1953). In near fine condition. A nice association.

Autograph letter signed by Harry S. Truman to Dean Acheson. Five pages, with 2 page transcription of Acheson’s 19 October response Truman recounts his near death from an infected gall bladder that required emergency, life-saving surgery, and reflects on his changing popular reputation. “Went to our outdoor theater [on June 19] in Swope Park to see ‘Call Me Madam,’ which I’ve never seen (and don’t want to).” Truman, in fact, was going to appear in a cameo at the end of the play. But he never made it. While waiting to come on “A pain overtook me which I couldn’t stop with all the will power I could exercise and the ‘Boss’ drove me home.” Admitted into the hospital, the “Doc told me that the white corpuscles were increasing at the rate of 1000 an hour and that a little butchering would be necessary. I wrote a codicil to my will and went out – I mean out. They gave me about five or ten gallons of anti-biotics by sticking needles in veins. But they just couldn’t kill me.” His wife Bess “says I’m worse than a Bridge Club Lady—talk about my operation and bore people to death.” He also talks about the difficult task of getting his memoirs published, with an impatient publisher waiting for the promised 300,000 words by the spring of 1954. But the hospital was flooded with flowers during his convalescence and Truman was touched by the genuine concerns expressed for “this still controversial former President.” No one, he tells Acheson, “knew the travails of what we went through in those years from Apr. 12, 1945 to Jan. 20, 1953 as did you, Gen. Marshall, [Treasury Secretary] John Snyder and [Secretary of Agriculture] Charlie Brannan.” A lengthy, revealing letter about Truman’s near death experience.

First edition, the author’s edition. Octavo, original half leatherette, slipcase, illustrated with 32 pages of black-and-white photographs. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, “To Honorable John Wesley Snyder from his good friend, comrade and associate in most trying times. He was the greatest of the great Secretaries of the Treasury.” The original slipcase is also inscribed to Snyder from Truman but has faded. John W. Snyder was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1946 by his close personal friend President Truman, with whom he had served in the Army Reserves. His task as Secretary was to establish a stable postwar economy. The main points of his program were maintaining confidence in the credit of the government, reducing the federal debt, keeping the interest rate low, and encouraging public thrift through investment in U.S. Savings Bonds. A conservative businessman, he had faith that the free economy would work itself out. He reduced the national debt while balancing the budget. He held several public and private positions including National Bank Receiver in the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Federal Loan Administrator, and Director of War Mobilization and Reconversion. In the last office he played a leading part in the transition of the Nation’s economy from wartime to a peacetime basis. An excellent association.

Rare typed letter signed by Harry S. Truman as President. One page on White House stationary, the letter is dated February 2, 1951 and addressed to the Honorable Lewis Strauss, 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York, New York. The letter reads: “Dear Admiral: I can’t tell you how very much I appreciated your letter of January twenty-ninth about Margaret’s acting at the performance for the Cancer Research Fund. Your letter pleased both Mrs. Truman and me very much. Sincerely Yours, Harry Truman.” The recipient, Lewis Strauss, was a Jewish-American businessman, philanthropist, public office holder, and naval officer. He was a major figure in the development of nuclear weapons and nuclear power in the United States. After the deaths of both of his parents from cancer, Strauss established a fund for physics research to develop better radiation treatment for cancer patients. In fine condition. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 13 inches by 11 inches.
