Rare limited edition Churchill Spode bone china plate. One of a limited edition of five thousand numbered plates commissioned by Thomas Goode and Co. Ltd. of London, this is number 860. The plate features a portrait of Churchill flanked by rampant lions and surrounded by a botanical gilt border. Founded by Josiah Spode in 1770, Spode pottery is renowned for perfecting the technique for transfer printing in underglaze blue on fine earthenware and credited with developing, around 1790, the formula for fine bone china that was generally adopted by the industry. In fine condition. The plate measures 10.5 inches in diameter.

From the collection of former four-term United States Senator Lloyd Millard Bentsen who ran as the Democratic Party nominee for vice president in 1988 on the Michael Dukakis ticket and served as the the 69th United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton. As a primary architect of the Clinton economic plan, Bentsen contributed to a $500 billion reduction in the deficit, launching the longest period of economic growth since World War II. More than 5 million new jobs were created during his tenure as Secretary. Bentsen was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999. In fine condition. During this period, he was Acting Secretary of State when Shultz was away from Washington and took a special interest in relations with Eastern Europe, the United Nations, and with various administrative reforms in the U.S. Department of State. It reads, “For Harry Hershfield who radiates sunshine and good feeling wherever he goes with appreciation and best wishes from one who has basked in that sunshine BM Baruch 1952.” Hershfield was an American cartoonist, humor writer and radio personality. He was known as “the Jewish Will Rogers”. He also was a columnist for the New York Daily Mirror. His books include Laugh Louder, Live Longer and Now I’ll Tell One. As a comics artist he is best remembered for his newspaper comic Abie the Agent. The image measures 7.75 inches by 10.75 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 22.5 inches by 18.5 inches. A nice association, uncommon with such a warm inscription.

Autograph letter signed by and entirely in the hand of the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. One page, text in Hebrew, addressed to Eliahu Eliachar, a notable Sephardic Zionist and Member of the Knesset, the letter reads in full, “Greetings, We don’t need separate political lists – not those of independent Yemenite or Sephardic political parties. Those lists can only distort/falsify the democratic process in our country and the process of integration as well. We need only Israeli lists. Too many small political groups can only affect our stability. The only way to resolve it is to change our voting system from relative voting to local voting. With great respect D. Ben-Gurion.” One of Ben-Gurion’s most ambitious goals in the first years of statehood was the unrestricted absorption of entire communities of newly-arrived Middle Eastern and North African Jews into the Ashkenazi-dominated Israeli society. Hundreds of thousands of new immigrants fled the inhospitable environment rising in the Islamic countries between 1948 and 1954 in the wake of the burgeoning Arab-Israeli conflict, settling in the economically-ravaged war-torn state. Other European Jewish communities from Bulgaria, Romania, and Poland were also transplanted to the Jewish State where they were forced to reside in transit villages and immigrants camps and became involved in domestic political in-fighting and became vulnerable to enticements from anti-establishment political groupings. Ben-Gurion feared that the plethora of small political parties could potentially destabilize Israel’s precarious democracy and advocated for a radical change in Israels electoral system with a two-party governing system, as opposed to the European proportional representational system. Above all, Ben-Gurion advocated for the swift unification of the numerous ethnic groups and the creation of an integrated singular Israeli identity. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable, offering a unique glimpse into the great leader’s political thought.

Autograph letter signed by the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. Addressed to Dr. Martin Rywell, editor of Listen Magazine published in Harriman, Tennessee, the letter reads, “Sdeh. Boker, 22.6.65 Dear Dr. Martin Rywell, Only the first part of the story you mention in your letter is true. I visited Burma in 1961. I met Prime Minister U Nu. We discussed Buddhism but the story about “a trick” is a pure invention. D. Ben-Gurion.” The letter refers to Ben Gurion’s two-week sojourn to Burma in 1961, which marked one of the longest official trips abroad for an Israeli prime minister. The first prime minister of Burma, known honorifically as U Nu, was a major figure among leaders of non-Western countries in the mid 20th century, many of which had opposed Israel’s establishment. In 1955, U Nu became the first foreign prime minister to visit the Jewish state, a highly significant act of support which encouraged a mutually beneficial relationship between the two young governments. Double matted and framed with a photograph of Ben-Gurion. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 15 inches. Rare and desirable.

Autograph letter signed by the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. It reads, “Sdeh. Boker, 28. 2. 70 Dear Mr. George P. Viegelmann, Jr. I share entirely your view that it is vitally necessary for everyone in the Middle East to live in peace. I am expressing a private view: I would be ready to give up a great Part of the areas which we hold since the six day war, if this would bring peace; by peace I mean friendship with our Arab neighbors and cooperation politically, economically and culturally, but perhaps only Russia can bring this about. I even doubt whether the American Gov. can achieve that. In the future there may be a change in Egypt. David Ben-Gurion.” This letter is a very unique piece of history, particularly in regards to Israeli-Arab relations and the study of peace in general. While publicly Ben-Gurion was the undoubted leader in Zionism, privately at the end of his life, he began to have other opinions. He desired peace even if it meant giving up land that they had fought to obtain. Ben-Gurion’s thoughts on peace in his latter years is corroborated by the recent documentary, Ben-Gurion, Epilogue. This movie features footage that was taken in 1968 and only recently discovered. In the footage he explains that Israel’s moral compass was inexorably tied to its treatment of the non-Jews living under its rule. Double matted and framed opposite a photograph of Ben-Gurion. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 16.5 inches.

Two pages, partially printed in Italian, the decree outlines a proposal for the construction of a bridge over the Sesia River in Vercelli, to be financed by the Kingdom of Italy as part of Napoleon’s civic improvement plan initiated during his administration of Ital. Dated April 12, 1809, the decree reads in part, “Napoleon, by the grace of God & by the Constitution, French Emperor, King of Italy, Protector of the Rhine Confederation, have decreed and decree what follows: Art. 1. Our Kingdom of Italy will contribute the certain sum of 150,000 lire to the expense of building the Vercelli bridge on the Sesia. Art. 2. The payment will be made in installments at the rate of 50,000 lire per year starting from the current year. Art. 3. This expense will be carried into the budget of the Minister of the Interior, and to the head of the extraordinary works of water and roads. Art. 4. The Minister of the Interior is in charge of the execution of this decree. Given at our Imperial Palace of the Tuileries this day April 12, 1809″. Rare original manuscript letter in French signed by brothers and co-monarchs Napoleon Bonaparte and Joseph Bonaparte. Napoleon, in his role as French Emperor, has signed as “Np” near the center of the letter, while Joseph, in his role as King of Spain and the Indies, has signed as “Joseph” at lower left. Napoleon’s original command was directed from Paris on January 24, 1814, while the docket indicates that Joseph received the sum in question the same day. Ex-Good Speeds, per pencil notation from October 14, 1964 at top verso. Napoleon instructed François Roullet, Baron de la Bouillerie (1764-1833), to give 500,000 francs to his older brother Joseph. De la Bouillerie had served in various financial capacities dating from Napoleon’s earliest days as First Consul, including General Treasurer of the French crown after 1811. Translated in full, with unchanged spelling and punctuation: “Monsieur Baron Labouillerie, you will give to King Joseph five hundred thousand francs. You will attribute this payment to his appanage, as well as the one of 300,000 francs that was made to him previously. On this, I pray God keeps you in his holy care. Paris the 24 January 1814. Photographic portrait of General Robert E. Lee flanked by his son, General George Washington Custis Lee, on his right and Colonel Walter Taylor on his left. Inscribed by one of the earliest photographers in American history, Mathew Brady, on a mount, “To Col. Robert Alexander Compliments of his friend, M.B. Brady.” The photograph was taken at Lee’s estate in Richmond, Virginia in April of 1865, only days after his surrender to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. This is one in a series taken by Brady in the basement below the back porch of the estate and from the original wet plates in the Brady-Handy collection. “This photograph is one of the most celebrated images produced by Brady, who established his reputation in the 1850s as the preeminent portraitist in New York and Washington, D.C. In the aftermath of the Civil War, Brady sought out General Robert E. Lee, who had returned to the Confederate capital at Richmond, Virginia, after his surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. At the photographer’s request General Lee reluctantly put on his uniform and posed at the back of his residence with his son, General George Washington Custis Lee (left), and his chief of staff, Colonel Walter H. Taylor (right). The image conveys the pathos of defeat for the Confederacy and for Lee personally. For Brady, who had been present at the first battle of the Civil War at Bull Run, this portrait completed his photographic coverage of the conflict” (WAM). Matted and framed. Autograph letter signed entirely in the hand of the 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan to Philadelphia publisher Mathew Carey. Addressed to Mathew Carey, the letter reads, “Lancaster 24 October 1825. Dear Sir, I have a favor to ask you which I feel assured you will grant. Your maxim, I know, both in public and private life is to render justice to all men. I have heard with surprise from several respectable sources that I have been denounced in Philadelphia by many as an enemy to internal imprisonment. This has arisen from what is alleged in your city to have been my course in the canal convention. Upon this subject I think I have been hardly treated. Some of your editors published my resolutions and the speeches of others in support of them; but not one of them has ever published my observations. As I feel a high respect for the opinion of many of the citizens of Philadelphia I should be sorry they would labor under a false impression respecting me. I therefore take the liberty of requesting you to have my resolution and the few remarks I made or such parts of them that you may deem proper republished by some one of your editors.
