The broadside measures 14 inches by 21 inches, printed in black gothic type, capital letters and portions of the heading in red and blue ink. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 20.5 inches by 28 inches. A rare and desirable piece of history.

    Henry Gugler Life-Size Engraved Portrait of Abraham Lincoln.

    Rare Henry Gugler engraving of President Abraham Lincoln, the largest engraved portrait of Lincoln produced. One of the foremost engravers of 19th century Germany, Gugler immigrated to the U.S. in 1853 where he found work with a New York firm specializing in bank note engraving. By the early 1860s he began working at the National Note Bureau, later known as the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. and in 1863, the National Note Bureau of Engraving and Printing hired him as one of their first vignette engravers. It was there that Gugler engraved the “The Pioneer” which appeared on the $5 and $20 United States bills. Gugler’s most famous engraving was this life size steel engraving of President Abraham Lincoln; his most important work completed in 1869 after two years of work. In very good condition. In a period wooden frame with gilt inner border. The entire piece measures 27 by 22 inches.

Presentation copy, with a full page inscription from Queen Victoria to Horatia Stopford, a Lady of her Bedchamber, “To dear Horatia Stopford from her affec. & grateful friend Victoria R Christmas 1885.” In near fine condition.

    Autograph signed letter by Franklin Delano Roosevelt as President. One page on White House letterhead and dated January 28th 1936, the letter reads: My dear Judge Meyer; Thank you ever so much for your kind thought in sending me the “Flying Cloud” etching. It is indeed a lovely thing and I am particularly glad to have it for my collection. Will you not be good enough to tell Mr. Dansford that I think it is very fine work. I am looking forward with pleasure to receiving the other etchings you mention. I am very grateful, too, for your cordial birthday greetings and good wishes. Very sincerely yours, “Franklin D. Roosevelt.” Roosevelt commissioned the first presidential library in the United States, built under his personal direction between 1939 and 1940. The library came to house 16,000 books, 15,000 photographs, 275,000 feet of movie film, and 300 sound recordings. The present letter refers to an etching of the historic clipper ship Flying Cloud which set the world’s sailing record for the fastest passage between New York and San Francisco in 1854 and was acquired by Roosevelt as an addition to his large etching and photograph collection. In near fine condition. Double matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Roosevelt. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 15 inches.

    Rare original Neptune Rex Ceremony Decree signed by Jawaharlal Nehru as Prime Minister. One page, partially printed with a woodcut headpiece of King Neptune, woodcut initials and red Neptune Rex seal. The decree reads, “Whereas by our Royal condescension we decree that our trusty and well beloved Norman Cliff has this day entered Our domain and has been rightly and duly initiated with all form and ceremony as our subject on board Indian Naval Ship Delhi. We do hereby charge all Sharks, Whales, Eels, Dolphins, Gollywogs, Pollywogs, etc. to abstain from eating, playing with or otherwise maltreating his person. And We further direct all Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, Globetrotters and Landlubbers who have not crossed the Equator of Our Royal domain to treat him with respect due to on of Our loyal subjects. Given at Our Court on the Equator this fifth day of June 1950 in longitude 92.” Signed at the conclusion by Jawaharlal Nehru and Norman Cliff. The Neptune Rex Ceremony was a traditional line-crossing ceremony performed to initiate sailors into the Kingdom of Neptune upon their first crossing of the Equator. The tradition may have originated with early Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian vessels passing notable headlands. By the eighteenth century, there were well-established line-crossing rituals in the British Royal Navy, United States Navy, Royal Australian Navy, and Royal Canadian Navy. In near fine condition.

    Rare autograph document signed by George Washington as President of the Society of the Cincinnati during the first general meeting of the Society and 5 years prior to his election and inauguration as the first President of the United States of America. One page partially printed on vellum with engraved vignettes by Auguste L. Belle after Jean-Jacques Andre LeVeau depicting America in knight’s armor trampling upon the British standard and the American eagle casting the British lion and Britannia out to sea with thunderbolts, engraved seal of the Order of the Cincinnati. The document reads: Be it known that Lieutenant William Andrews is a member of the society of the Cincinnati instituted by the Officers of the American Army at the Period of Dissolution, as well to commemorate the great Event which gave Independence to North American, as for the laudable Purpose of inculcating the Duty of laying down in Peace Arms assumed for public Defence, and of uniting in Acts of brotherly Affection and Bonds of perpetual Friendship the Members constituting the same. In Testimony whereof I, the President of the said Society have hereunto set my hand at Philadelphia in Pennsylvania this fifth day of may in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Four and in the Eighth Year of the Independence of the United States. By Order, ” “H.Knox” Secretary “G. Wahsington” President. William Andrews was commissioned a lieutenant on 1 January 1777 with the Third Continental Artillery. His regiment wintered at Valley Forge, andthe following June, Andrews was captured and held by the British in New York until he was exchanged in September 1781. In fine condition. Double matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Washington. The entire piece measures 36 inches by 23 inches. An exceptional example.
