Mallet, with the kindest regards of Arthur James Balfour. 18.8.92.” The recipient, Bernard Mallet, later Sir Bernard Mallet, was a civil servant who served as Balfour’s private secretary. Later, he was Registrar General and President of the Royal Statistical Society from 1916 to 1918. He married Marie Adeane, who at various times was a Maid of Honour to Queen Victoria and had two sons, one of whom was Sir Victor Mallet, the diplomat. In very good condition.

He was also the first Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives and an outspoken Federalist. In near fine condition. Small inscription.

Lincoln, March 14, 1864.” In fine condition. On March 14, 1864 Lincoln issued an order for the draft of 200,000 men to support the Union effort. Only two days prior, General Ulysses S. Grant assumed command of the Union armies. Matted and framed with and engraved portrait of Lincoln and gold biographical plaque. The endorsement measures 3.25 inches by 2.75 inches. The entire piece measures 22.75 inches by 19 inches.

Rare oloegraphic portrait of Abraham Lincoln by E.C. Middleton. With Middleton’s Warranted Oil Colors imprint to the verso of the frame dated 1864. Between 1861 and 1873, E.C. Middleton of Cincinnati published a series oval oleographic portraits intended to have the appearance of oil paintings including thirteen “Portraits of American Statesmen and Heroes.” Middleton invented the method of oleography which used the process of chromolithographic printing with oil based inks mounted on canvas. The portraits were exclusively sold in frames directly through agents by subscription. In fine condition. Framed. The portrait measures 17 inches by 14 inches. The entire piece measures 22 inches by 19 inches. Rare and desirable.

Stanton and contains a request from J.M. Francis of Hudson County, New Jersey that Edward Z. Laurence be appointed Secretary of Subsistence in the Volunteer Army of the United States. The request is approved and endorsed at the conclusion by Lincoln, “Let the appointment be made, if his service can be made useful A. Lincoln Aug. 17 1864.” Framed. The entire piece measures 27 inches by 9.5 inches. In very good condition with a bold inscription from Lincoln.

Theodore Roosevelt IV.” Laid in is Theodore Roosevelt IV’s business card as managing director of Lehman Brothers which is also inscribed on the verso, “To my good friend Roger May our paths cross again in Africa. Ted Roosevelt IV.” Theodore Roosevelt V, commonly known as Theodore Roosevelt IV, is an investment banker and managing director at Barclays Capital Corporation as well as a prominent conservationist. His name suffix varies since President Roosevelt’s father was Theodore Roosevelt Sr., though the same-named son did not commonly use a “Jr” name suffix. In very good condition. Rare.

Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “To General Sir Reginald Wingate with the high regard of Theodore Roosevelt April 21st 1911.” The recipient, Reginald Wingate was a British general and administrator in Egypt and the Sudan. He earned the nom de guerre Wingate of the Sudan. In December 1899, on Lord Kitchener being summoned to South Africa, Sir Reginald Wingate succeeded him as Governor-General of the Sudan and Sirdar of the Egyptian Army, being promoted to local major general on 22 December 1899. His administration of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, between 1899 and 1916, achieved the colonial goals of the British Empire, with the colony regaining a degree of prosperity and its infrastructure being rebuilt and expanded. In near fine condition with light rubbing and wear to the extremities. Housed in a custom half calf clamshell box. A nice association, signed trade editions of African Game Trails are rare.
