First British Edition of Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa; King Edward VIII's Copy with his ownership inscription

First British edition of the author’s masterpiece, a lyrical meditation of the years she lived in Kenya, from the library of King Edward VIII. Octavo, original cloth. With numerous original photographs and newspaper clippings affixed to the front few pages. Originally from the collection of the author’s brother Thomas Fasti Dinesen with two original black and white photographs of him hunting affixed to the verso of the front free endpaper and half-title page above which he has annotated, “My first lion April 6th 1922” and “Shot from boma April 11th 1922 The boma only five feet from the hill on account of my alias Thomas Dinesen.” In 1918, Thomas Dinesen moved to British East Africa to help his sister manage her coffee farm in the Ngong hills southwest of Nairobi where he designed a largely built the farm’s coffee roasting plant. Subsequently, from the library of Edward VIII with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, “‘The son of the sultan’ Edward Duke of Windsor.” Edward VIII was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire, and Emperor of India, from January 1936 until his abdication in December of the same year, after which he became the Duke of Windsor. And finally, inscribed on the title page, “To Hubert Gough with best wishes from Maj ‘one’ Sotheby March.” The recipient, Sir Hubert de la Poer Gough was a senior officer in the British Army in the First World War. Also affixed throughout are numerous clippings related to the Duke of Windsor and Blixen including a clipping with a photograph of her with Marilyn Monroe and original black and white photographs of her in 1921, later in life, and views of the plantation farmers and Ngong Hills. In very good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A unique example.

Modern pressing of Dylan’s third studio album The Times They Are a-Changin’. Inscribed by Bob Dylan, “To Dino Bob Dylan ’17.” Included is a letter of provenance from the original recipient which reads in part, “On April 26, 2017, I was at the Swiss Life Hall in Hannover…to see Dylan’s concert and meet some European tour managers…I had an ‘all areas’ pass which allowed me to access the external but reserved area of the concert hall. Dylan and his band had just got off the buses heading for catering/dressing room area…At that moment I presented him the LP ‘The times they are a-changin’ and a black marker. Bob did not say a word.” Matted and framed, the entire piece measures 26 inches by 19 inches. Signed examples of this particular album do not appear often.

Early printing of Williams’ classic play, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948. Octavo, original illustrated boards. association copy, inscribed or signed by several cast members for producer Danny Selznick. Signed by Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, Jessica Tandy, and Karl Malden. Inscribed by Kim Hunter on the verso of the first blank: “Love and best wishes always, Danny- one of my Favorite people- Kim.” Selznick’s ownership inscription on the lower corner of the half-title page. Danny Selznick is a producer and the youngest son of David O. Selznick; it was Selznick’s mother, Irene Mayer Selznick, who produced the stage version of Streetcar Named Desire; it was she who recommended to film producer Charles Feldman to cast Kim Hunter in the screen version. Very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Alvin Lustig. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Rare and desirable signed by Brando and the other cast members.

First edition of Mark Twain’s masterpiece. Octavo, original publisher’s decorated green cloth gilt to the spine and front panel, with 174 illustrations by Edward Kemble. A near fine example with just a touch of rubbing. Laid in is an original pen and ink drawing by Edward W. Kemble, titled in pencil in another hand, “The Pirate Chief carries off Sweet Marie,” pin-holes, light wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. With “88” on p 13 and “with the was” on p 57. As to issue points resulting from damaged plates (e.g. the dropped “5” on p 155, present here), Kevin MacDonnell concludes, “they are of no significance in determining the sequence of the printing of the sheets. All of these occur at random in relation to each other within copies of the first printing, a strong indicator of the use of multiple plates, and possibly mixed sheets within the collating process” (“Huck Finn among the Issue-Mongers,” Firsts, Vol 8, No 9, Sept 1998, pp 28-35). A very sharp example of this literary highspot.

Autograph letter signed from Mark Twain to Bram Stoker, who he thanks for a photograph of Henry Irving, “My Dear Stoker: It is a wonderful picture. I have never seen one of Irving before that could at all compare with it. I don’t know how to thank you enough. Sincerely Yours S.L. Clemens December 27, 93.” With the transmittal envelope in Twain’s, signed “From S.L. Clemens To Bram Stoker, Abby’s Theatre.” The famous British actor Henry Irving was one of the inspirations for Count Dracula, the title character of the 1897 novel Dracula. Matted and framed. The entire piece measures 14 inches by 18 inches. A nice association linking these two great writers.

Inscribed by the author, “For my dear Paul- from/ Eloise herself and The Author” and also signed by the illustrator, “and Hilary Knight in 2007.” A very sharp example, rare signed and inscribed by both Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight.

First edition of Twain’s masterpiece, Salesman’s Dummy Issue. Octavo, original publisher’s decorated green cloth gilt to the spine and front panel. With frontispiece portrait of Twain inserted at front (with the imprint of the Heliotype Printing Co., but the cloth is not visible). This book was specially printed to have a selection of text pages, so it is common for the recto of one page to have a certain page number, and the page number on the verso to jump by several pages. Because of this, this book only has some of the issue points that a copy of Huckleberry Finn would have: the title-leaf is integral, with the “1884” copyright date (this is the true first state, and it only appeared in the salesman’s dummy); page  lists “Him and Another Man” as being on page 88 (first state); “Huck Decided” on page  (first state). The Silas Phelps illustration on page 283 has a straight fly, but the leaf is integral with page 287 printed on the verso. Page 57 was not printed for this edition. Two samples of the spine were affixed onto the front pastedown – one is missing, the other, the spine for the sheep binding, is present. Publisher’s full green cloth, boards decoratively stamped in gilt and black (the front board is identical to the design of the cloth version, the rear board shows the design of the spine of the cloth edition). Plain spine is damaged and torn, boards are toned and worn, with a bump to the fore-edge of the front board, front free endpaper is nearly detached, and has offsetting from the spine samples, the gutter facing the first blank is cracked. Contemporary gift inscription and some offsetting on first blank, tissue guard lacking on frontispiece portrait, text leaves and frontispiece are soiled and toned, two sheets of the lined pages have subscriber’s information in manuscript, In very good condition. Housed in custom full morocco clamshell box. Exceptionally rare.
