Association copy linking the two most prominent and influential figures in Jewish America and England of this era, Issac Leeser and Moses Montefiore. American Jewish lay minister, author, translator, and publisher Issac Leeser revolutionized the format of the early American Jewish sermon by preaching in English, helping to establish regular sermons as a central part of the American rabbi’s work. Aspiring to make his influence international, Leeser corresponded regularly with Jewish leaders in England, most notably philanthropist and activist Sir Moses Montefiore, who played a pivotal role in the development of Proto-Zionism. Inscribed by Charles Dickens three days before his final reading in his American tour on the limitation page, “Faithfully yours, Charles Dickens New York. Wednesday Fifteenth April, 1868.” Dickens performed 22 readings at Steinway Hall in New York City between December 1867 and April 18, 1868. His final appearance occurred at a banquet dinner in his honor at the landmark Delmonico’s on Saturday the 18th where he famously stated that he would no longer denounce America, having restored his faith during this visit after his less successful first trip twenty years earlier. This extra-illustrated edition was compiled and bound by Curtis Guild in 1880 with an additional printed title-page stating that it is “Extended by the Insertion of the Author’s Autograph, a Portrait of Mr. Macready, a Complete Set of the Onwhyn plates, Illustrations by Darley, Reinhart, Eytinge and Others, Collected from Various Sources in Europe and America, by Curtis Guild / Boston, 1880.” In near fine condition. Barrow’s translation was the first of three English translations published in 1846 and is considered the most faithful to the original text. To conform to nineteenth century English standards other translations removed many of the explicit and implicit references to sexuality which adversely affected the readability of many scenes. Period bookplate to the front pastedown, in very good condition with some loss to a few pages. Housed in a custom half leather clamshell box. First editions are of the utmost scarcity.

Presentation copy, inscribed by Arthur James Balfour on the front free endpaper, “Stamford Raffles Flint with the best wishes of Arthur James Balfour on his leaving Eton Election 1864.” The recipient, Stamford Raffles Flint, was a colleague of Balfour’s at Eton who went on to become the Archdeacon of Cornwall. Tipped in a printed single leaf from the Old Etonians Association about a proposed portrait of Balfour for School Hall dated July, 1917. In very good condition.
