Each is finely bound in full red morocco, raised bands, gilt titles to the spine, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Illustrations throughout by Pauline Baynes. Octavo, seven volumes. An exceptional set.
Handwritten musical quotation inscribed by Russian composer and pianist Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich in Russian above the opening three bars of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor (Op. 47) on a two-stave system with holograph tempo directive and title, “To Lionel Okvin from Dmitri Shostakovich 17th February 1947.” Double matted and framed with a photograph of Shostakovich. The entire piece measures 14.75 inches by 15.75 inches. Rare and desirable.

First edition of Knight’s classic treatise. Octavo, bound in full morocco, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In near fine condition. First editions are scarce.

First edition of Mark Twain’s masterpiece. Octavo, original publisher’s decorated green cloth gilt to the spine and front panel, with 174 illustrations by Edward Kemble. A near fine example with just a touch of rubbing. Laid in is an original pen and ink drawing by Edward W. Kemble, titled in pencil in another hand, “The Pirate Chief carries off Sweet Marie,” pin-holes, light wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. With “88” on p 13 and “with the was” on p 57. As to issue points resulting from damaged plates (e.g. the dropped “5” on p 155, present here), Kevin MacDonnell concludes, “they are of no significance in determining the sequence of the printing of the sheets. All of these occur at random in relation to each other within copies of the first printing, a strong indicator of the use of multiple plates, and possibly mixed sheets within the collating process” (“Huck Finn among the Issue-Mongers,” Firsts, Vol 8, No 9, Sept 1998, pp 28-35). A very sharp example of this literary highspot.

First edition of Watson’s ground breaking work regarding the discovery of DNA for which the author, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated with 19 half-tone illustrations and 11 diagrams. Signed by both James D. Watson and Francis Crick on the title page. Very good in an excellent dust jacket with some light rubbing to the spine crown. Jacket design by Dorothy Judd. Foreword by Sir Lawrence Bragg. Rare signed by both Watson and Crick.

First edition of Mark Twain’s masterpiece. Octavo, original publisher’s decorated green cloth, with 174 illustrations by Edward W. Kemble. The author Zane Grey’s copy, with his blindstamp to the front free endpaper and first blank. Contains all the agreed upon first issue points for the clothbound book: page 9 with “Decided” remaining uncorrected (to “Decides”); page 13, illustration captioned “Him and another Man” listed as on page 88; page 57, 11th line from bottom reads “with the was,” instead of “with the saw”. Other points of bibliographical interest included in this copy are the frontispiece portrait without cloth table cover under the bust, bearing the Heliotype Printing Co. imprint; copyright page dated 1884; page 143 with “l” missing from “Col.” at top of illustration and with broken “b” in “body” on line seven; page 155 with a larger final “5”; page 161, no signature mark “11”. As to issue points resulting from damaged plates (e.g. the dropped “5” on p 155), MacDonnell concludes, “they are of no significance in determining the sequence of the printing of the sheets. All of these occur at random in relation to each other within copies of the first printing, a strong indicator of the use of multiple plates, and possibly mixed sheets within the collating process” (“Huck Finn” Firsts Magazine). A nice association copy linking these two great American writers. Housed in a full morocco clamshell case.

"I own one copy of Three Stories and Ten Poems and would be very happy if it became valuable": Ernest Hemingway Autograph Letter Excerpt
Chicago: The Walden Book Shop 1930.
Rare letter excerpt boldly signed by Ernest Hemingway. Published by the Walden Book Shop in 1930, the introduction begins "The following notes are excerpts from a Hemingway letter in answer to questions concerning editions and numbers of copies." It goes on to provide a long italicized quote from the letter in which Hemingway describes the printings of his early books from Three Stories and Ten Poems through the forthcoming Men Without Women (1927). The quote reads, in part: “…The books have been Three Stories and Ten Poems, Contact Press, 1953-350 copies out of print, In Our Times, Three Mountains Press, 1924, 150, I think…They claim to be issuing a new edition. Then Scribners published The Torrents of Spring in the spring of 1926 in an unrestrained edition and The Sun Also Rises came out in the same year with, I believe an attempt made to print and sell as many as possible…I own one copy of Three Stories and Ten Poems and would be very happy if it became valuable in order that I might have something to leave to my children.” Signed by Hemingway in he lower right corner of the pamphlet. In fine condition. Double matted and framed with a portrait of Hemingway. The entire piece measures 26 inches by 17 inches. An exceptional example.
First Edition of Henderson the Rain King; Inscribed by Saul Bellow to Fellow Writer Christopher Hitchens

First edition of Bellow’s fourth book. Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page to fellow writer Christopher Hitchens, “For Christopher with good wishes Saul Bellow.” Hitchens wrote, “When I think of Bellow, I think not just of a man whose genius for the vernacular could seem to restate Athenian philosophy as if run through a Damon Runyon synthesizer, but of the author who came up with such graphic expressions for vulgarity and thuggery and stupidity—the debased currency of those too brutalized to have retained the capacity for wonder” (Christopher Hitchens). Hitchens signature on the front free endpaper, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. Jacket painting by Bill Preston. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A remarkable association.

First edition of Twain’s masterpiece, Salesman’s Dummy Issue. Octavo, original publisher’s decorated green cloth gilt to the spine and front panel. With frontispiece portrait of Twain inserted at front (with the imprint of the Heliotype Printing Co., but the cloth is not visible). This book was specially printed to have a selection of text pages, so it is common for the recto of one page to have a certain page number, and the page number on the verso to jump by several pages. Because of this, this book only has some of the issue points that a copy of Huckleberry Finn would have: the title-leaf is integral, with the “1884” copyright date (this is the true first state, and it only appeared in the salesman’s dummy); page  lists “Him and Another Man” as being on page 88 (first state); “Huck Decided” on page  (first state). The Silas Phelps illustration on page 283 has a straight fly, but the leaf is integral with page 287 printed on the verso. Page 57 was not printed for this edition. Two samples of the spine were affixed onto the front pastedown – one is missing, the other, the spine for the sheep binding, is present. Publisher’s full green cloth, boards decoratively stamped in gilt and black (the front board is identical to the design of the cloth version, the rear board shows the design of the spine of the cloth edition). Plain spine is damaged and torn, boards are toned and worn, with a bump to the fore-edge of the front board, front free endpaper is nearly detached, and has offsetting from the spine samples, the gutter facing the first blank is cracked. Contemporary gift inscription and some offsetting on first blank, tissue guard lacking on frontispiece portrait, text leaves and frontispiece are soiled and toned, two sheets of the lined pages have subscriber’s information in manuscript, In very good condition. Housed in custom full morocco clamshell box. Exceptionally rare.
