"This life is slow suicide, unless you read": First Edition of The Caine Mutiny; Inscribed by Herman Wouk to Ira and Lee Gershwin
Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1951.
First edition of Wouk’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Octavo, original blue cloth, cartographic endpapers. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page in the year of publication, “For Lee and Ira- Affectionately, Herman Wouk 7 March 1951.” The publication date was March 19, 1951. From the library of Ira Gershwin. The Wouk’s and the Gershwin’s were closed friends, and Ira is cited in the author’s 1985 novel Inside, Out, where the protagonist Goodkind comes face to face with the brothers George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin. Near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with “The City Boy” on the rare panel. Jacket painting by John Hull. An exceptional association.
