The photograph was taken by renowned photographer Art Shay in October 1976, the same day the author heard that he had been awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. Shay is a former Time-Life staff reporter who became a full-time photojournalist in the early fifties. More than 25,000 of his photographs have since appeared in numerous publications, including Life, Time, the New York Times, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated. His work has been much exhibited, critically acclaimed, and collected. He has won some twenty Art Director awards for distinguished photography, as well as commendation for Life magazine’s “Picture of the Year” in 1959. Signed and stamped by Shay on the verso.
