Photograph of David Ben-Gurion signed and dated in 1959 by him in Hebrew, presented to Max Goldweber in appreciation from The United Jewish Appeal. The UJA-Federation, as it is known today, was created from the 1986 merger of the United Jewish Appeal, established in 1939, and the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York, a predecessor organization established in 1917. It is the largest local philanthropy in the world. Headquartered in New York City, the organization raises and allocates funds annually to fulfill a mission to “care for people in need, inspire a passion for Jewish life and learning, and strengthen Jewish communities in New York, in Israel, and around the world.” Framed, the entire piece measures 12.5 inches by 17 inches.

Autograph letter signed by the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. It reads, “Sdeh. Boker, 28. 2. 70 Dear Mr. George P. Viegelmann, Jr. I share entirely your view that it is vitally necessary for everyone in the Middle East to live in peace. I am expressing a private view: I would be ready to give up a great Part of the areas which we hold since the six day war, if this would bring peace; by peace I mean friendship with our Arab neighbors and cooperation politically, economically and culturally, but perhaps only Russia can bring this about. I even doubt whether the American Gov. can achieve that. In the future there may be a change in Egypt. David Ben-Gurion.” This letter is a very unique piece of history, particularly in regards to Israeli-Arab relations and the study of peace in general. While publicly Ben-Gurion was the undoubted leader in Zionism, privately at the end of his life, he began to have other opinions. He desired peace even if it meant giving up land that they had fought to obtain. Ben-Gurion’s thoughts on peace in his latter years is corroborated by the recent documentary, Ben-Gurion, Epilogue. This movie features footage that was taken in 1968 and only recently discovered. In the footage he explains that Israel’s moral compass was inexorably tied to its treatment of the non-Jews living under its rule. Double matted and framed opposite a photograph of Ben-Gurion. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 16.5 inches.

Autograph letter signed by the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. Addressed to Dr. Martin Rywell, editor of Listen Magazine published in Harriman, Tennessee, the letter reads, “Sdeh. Boker, 22.6.65 Dear Dr. Martin Rywell, Only the first part of the story you mention in your letter is true. I visited Burma in 1961. I met Prime Minister U Nu. We discussed Buddhism but the story about “a trick” is a pure invention. D. Ben-Gurion.” The letter refers to Ben Gurion’s two-week sojourn to Burma in 1961, which marked one of the longest official trips abroad for an Israeli prime minister. The first prime minister of Burma, known honorifically as U Nu, was a major figure among leaders of non-Western countries in the mid 20th century, many of which had opposed Israel’s establishment. In 1955, U Nu became the first foreign prime minister to visit the Jewish state, a highly significant act of support which encouraged a mutually beneficial relationship between the two young governments. Autograph letter signed by and entirely in the hand of the founder of modern day Israel and first prime minister David Ben-Gurion. One page, text in Hebrew, addressed to Eliahu Eliachar, a notable Sephardic Zionist and Member of the Knesset, the letter reads in full, “Greetings, We don’t need separate political lists – not those of independent Yemenite or Sephardic political parties. Those lists can only distort/falsify the democratic process in our country and the process of integration as well. We need only Israeli lists. Too many small political groups can only affect our stability. The only way to resolve it is to change our voting system from relative voting to local voting. With great respect D. Ben-Gurion.” One of Ben-Gurion’s most ambitious goals in the first years of statehood was the unrestricted absorption of entire communities of newly-arrived Middle Eastern and North African Jews into the Ashkenazi-dominated Israeli society. Hundreds of thousands of new immigrants fled the inhospitable environment rising in the Islamic countries between 1948 and 1954 in the wake of the burgeoning Arab-Israeli conflict, settling in the economically-ravaged war-torn state. Other European Jewish communities from Bulgaria, Romania, and Poland were also transplanted to the Jewish State where they were forced to reside in transit villages and immigrants camps and became involved in domestic political in-fighting and became vulnerable to enticements from anti-establishment political groupings. Ben-Gurion feared that the plethora of small political parties could potentially destabilize Israel’s precarious democracy and advocated for a radical change in Israels electoral system with a two-party governing system, as opposed to the European proportional representational system. Above all, Ben-Gurion advocated for the swift unification of the numerous ethnic groups and the creation of an integrated singular Israeli identity. In near fine condition. Autograph Letter Signed by David Ben-Gurion regarding his meeting with Angelica Balabanoff, a close associate of Benito Mussolini

Autograph letter signed by the founder of modern day Israel and first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion regarding his controversial meeting with Angelica Balabanoff, a close associate of Benito Mussolini. Addressed to German-Israeli Holocaust survivor Walter Zvi Barak and dated October 26, 1968, the letter translated from Hebrew into English reads, “Shalom and greetings. I learned of the photograph only from your letter. Indeed, I exchanged a letter with Ms. Balabanova, but I do not remember ever meeting her or being photographed with her. I know that Mussolini was once a socialist. I would not have been ashamed to have a picture taken together with Balabanova, but as far as I can recall, I never met her, and in any case, I do not know how this picture got into a book about Mussolini. It is very possible that this is not my photograph, but I see no crime in being photographed with Ms. Balabanova. Yours sincerely…” Accompanied by the letter from Walter Zvi Barak to which Ben-Gurion is replying which reads, “As a man who is professionally engaged in teaching and studying the history of the new era, I have recently come across a finding that forced me to draw your attention to. I have purchased the book: Mussolini – a Study in Power by Ivone Kirkpatrick Pocket book, Disensbooks published by arrow books Febr-1968. The book is accompanied by a series of photographs from the fascist world, including many pictures of Hitler and the famous picture depicting the hanging corpse of Mussolini. Among these pictures, much to my surprise, is a photograph of your honor with Ms. Angelica Balabanoff, a Jewish socialist whose influence on Mussolini was great even before he became a fascist, during his days as the editor of “Avanti”. I was shocked to see a photograph of your honor in the framework of fascist illustrations, and by publishing the picture with such a combination, I doubted that it had been done without your knowledge and without the consent of your honor? As a Jew in general, and as a survivor of the Holocaust in particular, I was deeply saddened by the matter and I feel the affront expressed here towards your dignity as the leader of the Jewish people, the victim of fascism. Another interesting fact stands out. In all the pictures, the characters are identified by name and function, but in this photograph, in which also your honor appears it was stated: “Angelica Balabanoff, a socialist acquaintance of Mussolini” I deliberated with doubt that this might not be the picture of your honor at all, so I asked certain friends for identification, and indeed no one doubted that this was a photograph of your honor. There are three options available now: a) That your honor is aware of the existence of this photograph and agrees to its publication. In such case – will you please accept my expression above as a personal response stemming from deep sorrow. b) That your honor does not know about its existence and its printing – then my hope that my referral will be beneficial for your honor. c) That this is not the picture of your honor, and then would you please be kind enough to inform me of the regrettable mistake and accept my heartfelt apology. I would be happy to receive an answer from your honor. With great respect and honor, Zvi Barak.” Born in Russia and educated in Belgium, Angelica Balabanoff (1878-1965) joined the Italian Socialist Party after settling in Rome in 1900, becoming a close associate of Benito Mussolini (1883-1945), the future Fascist dictator of Italy. Balabanoff returned to Russia in 1917 to support the Bolshevik cause but again went to Italy in 1922 having grown disillusioned by Russian Socialism. Ben-Gurion met Balabanoff in Tel Aviv in 1962 and a photograph of their meeting was included in Kirkpatrick’s 1964 book Mussolini: Study of a Demagogue. The letters are in near fine condition. A unique association.

Large original silver gelatin photograph of the Founding Father of Israel David Ben-Gurion, boldly signed by him. Ben–Gurion‘s signature measures 5.25 inches by 1.25 inches. x 1.25″ alone. Also signed and dated “Charles Bergman May 1947” who was possibly the photographer. The photograph was taken in May 1947, one year before Ben–Gurion declared the formation of the modern state of Israel on May 14, 1948. The British had controlled Mandatory Palestine since 1920, but in May 1947, they asked for international guidance in resolving the complicated question of possession and ownership. The British submitted the Palestine question to the United Nations. The results of the 11-nation investigative committee informed the British announcement in September 1947 of their intention to liquidate Mandatory Palestine in May 1948. The photograph measures 13.5 inches by 10.5 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 21.5 inches by 20 inches. This is the largest signed photograph of Ben-Gurion we have encountered.
