Rare limited Busy Bee edition of the transatlantic statement that set forth the British and American governments’ mutual economic and societal goals following the end of WWII. 12mo, original wrappers as issued. One of 100 numbered copies printed in secret in the office of the Busy Bee, this is number 73. One of the most important literary publishing houses in the Netherlands, The Busy Bee, or De Bezige Bij, was founded illegally in 1943 during the German occupation of the Netherlands by publisher Geert Lubberhuizen. Initially composed of a group of students, its first publication was a poem by Jan Campert called De Achttien Dooden [The Eighteen Dead], which describes the execution of 15 resistance fighters and three communists. The poem was sold to raise money for Jewish children who were placed with Dutch families; when it was published, in the spring of 1943, Campert had already died in the Neuengamme concentration camp. In near fine condition. A rare and desirable printing of this important document.

Rare dinner program from the celebration held in honor of the 80th birthday of Winston Churchill by the Woodford Division Conservative Association on Tuesday, November 23rd 1954. Octavo, original stiff paper wrappers, ribbon bound in. Signed by Winston Churchill and Clementine Churchill on the front panel. Accompanied by a typed transmittal letter dated February 9th 1955 signed by Churchill’s personal private secretary L.M. Shillingford to John Redfern returning the signed menu with ‘best wishes from Sir Winston and Lady Churchill for the work which you will be doing for the new Chigwell Division’, a black and white photograph of Churchill speaking at the dinner by Gerald J. Sharp of South Woodford, an invitation to the dinner, a telegram from Churchill dated December 1952 thanking Redfern for his kind message, and a letter from Woodford Conservative Association asking him to contribute to a portrait of Lady Churchill by John Napper to be presented to Churchill as a birthday present. In near fine condition.

Rare typed letter signed by Winston S. Churchill to his brother and only sibling, Major John Churchill, framed with an original duotone print of Yousuf Karsh’s famed portrait of Churchill “The Roaring Lion” which, in May 1941, was featured on the cover of Life magazine and brought Karsh international fame. One page, on Churchill’s 21 Hyde Park Gate, London letterhead, the letter is addressed to Major John Churchill and reads in full, “9” December, 1955. “My dear Johnnie,” I am indeed obliged to you and Kitty for your birthday token and good wishes. The portraits are beautifully done and I am delighted to be able to hang them in Chartwell. Thank you both so much. “Yours sincerely, Winston S. Churchill.” John Strange Spencer-Churchill, known as Jack Churchill, was the younger son of Lord Randolph Churchill and his wife Jennie, and Winston Churchill’s only sibling. He served in the South African Light Horse alongside Winston in the Second Boer War in 1899–1900 and later fought in World War I. After the war, he became a businessman in the City of London firstly as a partner at stockbrokers Nelke, Phillips & Bendix from 1906 and then at Vickers, da Costa, making partner in 1921. In fine condition. Double matted and framed with an original duotone print of Yousuf Karsh’s famed portrait of Churchill taken in 1941. The portrait measures 9 inches by 10.5 inches. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 20 inches. Rare and desirable.

Winston Churchill at the wartime meeting of the Commonwealth Prime Ministers, signed by him and 43 other world leaders. The 1944 Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ Conference, hosted by the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill between 1 and 16 May, brought together the heads of government from all the Dominions except Ireland and Newfoundland and was the first in a series of 17 such conferences which took place between 1944 and 1969 and arguably the most significant, having been convened in order to coordinate the Allied war effort. At the 1944 Conference, the assembled leaders agreed to support the Moscow Declaration and the Commonwealth contribution to the upcoming Operation Overlord was discussed. Among the international leaders whose signatures appear here are, the British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden, South African Prime Minister Jan Smuts, Lord Privy Seal Lord Beaverbrook, Indian Prime Minister Hari Singh and Deputy Prime Minister Clement Attlee. Photograph by Bassano, signed by him at the lower edge. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 30 inches by 20 inches. A unique piece of world history.
