First edition of the author’s third book and hallmark of campaign journalism. Octavo, original black boards. Boldly signed by Hunter Thompson on the half-title page and subjects, George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Gary Hart and illustrator, Ralph Steadman. Fine in a near fine first issue price-clipped dust jacket with the white boarder around the photograph of Thompson and McGovern on the rear panel. The book is notable for its introduction not only to the candidates of 1972 but also its early glimpses of future political leaders. Gary Hart of Colorado, who served as McGovern’s campaign manager and would later run for and win a seat in the United States Senate, and Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter, who would himself capture the 1976 Democratic nomination and Presidency. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. A unique example with this collection of signatures.

Association copy, inscribed by President Carter to former four-term United States Senator Lloyd M. Bentsen on a Presidential bookplate affixed to the front free endpaper, “To Lloyd Bentsen J. Carter.” The recipient, Lloyd Millard Bentsen, ran as the Democratic Party nominee for vice president in 1988 on the Michael Dukakis ticket and served as the the 69th United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton. As a primary architect of the Clinton economic plan, Bentsen contributed to a $500 billion reduction in the deficit, launching the longest period of economic growth since World War II. More than 5 million new jobs were created during his tenure as Secretary. Bentsen was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket.

Brown was the U.S. Secretary of Defense from 1977 to 1981 in the cabinet Jimmy Carter. He had previously served in the John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson administrations as Director of Defense Research and Engineering and Secretary of the Air Force. In the last stages of the Cold War, as Secretary of Defense, he set the groundwork for the Camp David accords. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed by Carter and Brown.
