    Signed limited edition of Byrd’s account of his first expedition to the South Pole. Octavo, original publisher’s half parchment over blue boards, with 74 illustrations and maps. Author’s Autograph Edition, one of one thousand copies signed by the author and publisher on the limitation leaf, this is number 303. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, “To Eleanor Roosevelt with the highest possible admiration and affectionate regards Dick Byrd New Years Day 1931.” The recipient, Eleanor Roosevelt, first met Richard Byrd when her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, was Assistant Secretary of the Navy and Byrd, a recent graduate of the Naval Academy, had been assigned to the gunboat USS Dolphin, which also served as the yacht of the Secretary of the Navy. Upon Byrd’s return to American soil in 1930 following his first expedition to the Antarctic, he was welcomed by President Roosevelt who, with Eleanor, later attended an honorary dinner given by the International Rescue Committee held in Byrd’s honor. In very good condition with a closed tear to the crown of the spine and dampstaining to the spine and lower portion of the front panel. An exceptional association.

    First edition of Admiral Byrd’s classic exploration work of his second Antarctic Expedition. Octavo, original cloth, cartographic endpapers, frontispiece, illustrated with maps. From the library of James Stephen “Steve” Fossett with his bookplate to the pastedown. American businessman and record-setting aviator Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in 2002 in his 10-story high balloon Spirit of Freedom. He completed the 2002 trip in 13 days, 8 hours, and 33 minutes and set records for both the Longest Distance Flown Solo in a Balloon and Fastest Balloon Flight Around the World. Fossett was also one of sailing’s most prolific distance record holders set the Absolute World Speed Record for airships with a Zeppelin NT in 2004. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career including aviation’s highest award, the Gold Medal of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which he was awarded in 2002. Fossett disappeared on September 3, 2007 while flying a light aircraft over the Great Basin Desert, between Nevada and California. In near fine condition. Introduction by Claude A. Swanson.

    Original black and white photograph of polar aviator Richard E. Byrd. Inscribed by Byrd, “May 9, 1926 To Cornelius C. Greenway with best wishes R.E. Byrd.” Additionally signed by him, “May 9, 1926 R.E. Byrd” and dated a third time, “Nov. 28, 1929.” The recipient, Cornelius C. Greenway, was a Dutch-American Universalist minister and eminent autograph collector. He served as the minister of the All Souls Church in Brooklyn, New York for almost 40 years and led the opposition against the unification of the Unitarian and Universalist denominations. In near fine condition.
