Rare 19th century example of Johnson’s famed Civil War era map of the state of Florida. One page, the hand-colored lithographic map depicts the state in full with color coding according to county in the midst of the American Civil War with references to towns, railroads, villages, depots, swamps, the territories of Native American tribes, forts and battle sites related to the Seminole Wars, Lake Okeechobee, the Everglades, Indian Hunting Grounds between Fort Poinsett and Key Biscayne Bay, Tampa Bay and the Okefenokee Swamp. Additionally notes the course of a proposed canal route leading from Tampa to the Atlantic and the Arredondo Grant to the west of St. Augustine. An inset map in the lower left hand quadrant details the Florida Keys. Featuring the strapwork style border common to Johnson’s atlas work from 1860 to 1863. In near fine condition. Matted and framed. The entire piece measures 24 inches by 21.5 inches.

Kingsport, Ohio: 1859.
Rare autograph letter signed by and completely in the hand of Abolitionist John Brown to his wife and children regarding his return home. One page, entirely in the hand of John Brown, the letter is dated 7th April, 1859, and reads in part: “Kingsport, Ohio Dear Wife and children All, I write you March 25th enclosing Draft for $150, saying write me Care of American House… to say what articles you need of provisions, clothing, shoes +c. Have you written? I still wish you to retain what money you can for a few days, as I hope to be at home to advise with you about laying it out. I have been entirely laid up for more than a week… All well in Hudson, Akron and West Andover lately. May write again before getting home. My best wish for you all is that you may truly love God and his Commandments. Your affectionate husband and father, John Brown.” In December of 1858, Brown led a successful raid in Missouri, freeing 11 slaves, and leading them to Canada in January, 1859. He then met with Frederick Douglass in Detroit where he made a final plea to convince Douglass of the necessity of violence in ending American slavery. Brown had conceived of the Harper’s Ferry raid in early 1859, and would return home to North Elba one last time in June, before going to Harper’s Ferry in July, ending with his raid on the Federal Armory there on October 16th. His wife would not see him again until she was allowed to visit him in the Jefferson County Jail on the eve of his execution. In very good condition. Double matted and framed. The letter measures 6.5 by 4 inches. The entire piece measures 20 inches by 16.5 inches.

First edition in English of Daniel Gilles’ account of the most difficult yacht race in the world. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated with photographs, charts and diagrams. From the library of James Stephen “Steve” Fossett with his bookplate to the pastedown. American businessman and record-setting aviator Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in 2002 in his 10-story high balloon Spirit of Freedom. He completed the 2002 trip in 13 days, 8 hours, and 33 minutes and set records for both the Longest Distance Flown Solo in a Balloon and Fastest Balloon Flight Around the World. Fossett was also one of sailing’s most prolific distance record holders set the Absolute World Speed Record for airships with a Zeppelin NT in 2004. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career including aviation’s highest award, the Gold Medal of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which he was awarded in 2002. Fossett disappeared on September 3, 2007 while flying a light aircraft over the Great Basin Desert, between Nevada and California. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket.

Ownership signature of American entomologist Townend Glover, “Townend Glover, New York, 1845,” and from the extensive fishing, sporting and ornithological library of John Gerard Heckscher of New York with his three bookplates. Heckscher’s collection was the second largest collection of its type in mid-19th century America with a particular focus on Walton’s Complete Angler, of which he had numerous editions as is illustrated in his bookplates. In very good condition. A rare piece of American angling literature with exceptional provenance.
