A Proper Marriage.

First Edition of A Proper Marriage; Signed by Doris Lessing

A Proper Marriage.

LESSING, Doris.

Item Number: 788

London: Michael Joseph, 1954.

First Edition of the author’s second novel in her acclaimed Martha Quest series. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Doris Lessing on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket which contains the rare yellow wraparound band stating that Lessing has won the Somerset Maugham Award. Jacket design by Peter Rudland. Rather uncommon with the band present.

Doris Lessing has been awarded copiously, most recently including the 2001 David Cohen Prize, 2001 Premio Príncipe de Asturias, and the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature. A Proper Marriage contributed to her perception as an able writer. It is "[v]ery impressive....Portrays modern woman in all her complexity" (Literary Horizons). "A totally modern work. Martha Quest is, above all, ironically percieved by the author in whose hands irony is an instrument of compassion" (New Republic). "I read the Children of Violence novels and began to understand how a person could write about the problems of the world in a compelling and beautiful way. And it seems to me that as the most important thing I could ever do" (Barbara Kingsolver).
